Weed and Seed-sponsored programs the Initiative supports are:
Gang resistance and youth enrichment programs that are part of after-school, summer, athletic and arts programs
And all youth programs include mentoring and structured curricula
Designed to strengthen the children's roles as community citizens, and their own talents and capacity to deal with conflict and competition
Adult and senior support and enrichment
2009-2010 Programs:
After School Programs: Children participate in mentoring and tutoring programs in a secure environment; 13-16 year olds also have an opportunity to participate in a video arts and culinary arts program
Summer Youth Program Centers: children 6-12 years old at the THA center and 13-17 year olds at a second satellite center
Drill Team: 45 children from Greater Donnelly joined the Miller Homes Smooth Steppers drum core and drill team,
Team Hope: a boxing, mentoring and life skills program aimed and needy and under-served youth; available also to youth participating in the summer and after school programs
Choices: available two evenings a week; directed to youth 13-17 years old under signficant pressure to join gangs
Video Arts: Provides children the opportunity to work video cameras, act on camera and learn to read and write their own script
Community Newspaper/Debate Team/Book Wriing: With assistance from a volunteer author, this program provides youth an opportunity to design, edit, photograph and produce a community newspaper on a bi-monthly basis. A debate program is also underway.
Police Explorers: This program is held at the Trenton Police Academy and cadets are instructed by police officers and guest speakers on various aspects of police work.
Community Garden/Greenhouse: Weed & Seed contracted with Isles for the purchase of supplies to create a community garden; the first harvest this year was shared within the community.
